Disgraced, Ayad Akhtar's Pulitzer Prize-winning 2012 play, explores assimilation, hidden bias, and the fragility of self-image in post-9/11 America. The story follows Amir Kapoor, a successful Pakistani-American corporate lawyer in New York who has suppressed his Muslim heritage to pursue the American dream. During a tense dinner party with his white artist wife and their colleagues, volatile debates over race, religion, and politics erupt. As his professional and personal life unravels, the play exposes how easily a carefully constructed identity can shatter when built on denial rather than true integration.
The New York Times calls it “… [a] vitally engaged play about the thorny questions of identity and religion in the contemporary world…. Mr. Akhtar puts contemporary attitudes towards religion under a microscope, revealing how tenuous self-image can be for people born into one way of being who have embraced another…”
